Clearing the Way: The First Steps of a Major Home Makeover

Embarking on a large-scale home organization project is always an exciting challenge, and this one was no exception.

We arrived on day 1 with a team of four dedicated organizers, ready to transform our client’s home into a more functional and peaceful space. Beginning in the living room and kitchen, we worked hard to clean and declutter, categorizing items into groups such as blankets, clothes, shoes, toys, and anything that didn't fit in those areas. The front room, which had a large pool table, became our main work area. It was ideal for gathering, sorting, and eliminating items.

By the end of the day 2, a junk removal company was hauling away trash that had accumulated and bulk items, including an old couch. They even helped us tidy up the patio and dispose of excess cardboard boxes! On day 3, we brought in a cleaning crew to give the home a deep clean. During this initial week, we managed nine loads of laundry to clear out the master bedroom, gradually advancing and making room for the transformation to take place.

Every Item Has a Home: The Mid-Project Momentum

Week 2 we got started on the primary closet. We replaced the hangers with slimline ones to optimize hanging space and incorporated clear storage boxes and shoe shelves from Target for a neat, streamlined appearance. Two large totes were used to store bulky sweatshirts, which quickly became one of our client's preferred solutions for her collection. We moved approximately 90% of items that didn't belong in the closet, creating space for clothing and shoes that had previously cluttered the bedroom.

To make the most of our time, our team divided the tasks and began working in the kitchen and bathrooms. Our client already owned several matching bins that suited her style, so we included them in our design. While the kitchen wasn't excessively cluttered, it still benefited from our approach of removing everything, assessing, and thoughtfully organizing each item.

The next project was the craft room, which took two organizers an entire day to tackle. We removed trash, sorted the supplies, and gave the area a deep clean. To organize and store materials, we used a range of clear boxes from The Container Store, ensuring our client could easily locate what she needed and avoid unnecessary purchases in the future. Although we initially thought about getting rid of the rack with gray bins, it proved to be an ideal storage option for daily office supplies. The greatest reward? Watching our client make use of her revitalized office space that same evening.

As we organized our client's daughters room, we thoroughly decluttered the space, setting aside outgrown clothes for donation or future use. We replaced her hangers to match the rest of the household and introduced some strategic storage solutions to make toy cleanup easier. The room felt complete, especially after she chose a beautiful new rug for the floor.

Final Details, Lasting Impact

During the final days, we focused on refining each space.

Our client worked alongside us every day, making decisions and learning the process. It was heartwarming to see how, as the days went by, letting go of unnecessary items became easier for her.

The dog room/empty bedroom, which doubled as a staging area during the project, gradually transformed into a fabric and supply storage room for our client’s craft business. We carefully organized her supplies and finished projects in totes, ready for transport to craft shows.

We returned to the kitchen with a few additional products, including a water bottle holder and a straw organizer that mounted to the cupboard door—freeing up half a drawer for dish towels! We fine-tuned cabinet arrangements, ensuring everything had a designated place for easy, everyday use.

The hall closet and laundry area were addressed last. With horses, dogs, cats, fish, and chickens, our client required a space for both animal supplies and linens. Clear multipurpose bins and lidded boxes were once again essential, transforming what was a disorganized catch-all closet into an organized and useful space.

On the last day, our team focused on finishing touches. One of them being sorting through a large jewelry chest and two smaller ones, we helped our client sort through memorabilia from her younger years. It was a joy to share in her nostalgia, and even more rewarding to see her confidently decide what to keep and what to let go.

By the end of the project, not only was every room transformed, but so was our client’s outlook on her space. She trusted us, embraced the process, and felt the profound relief that comes with a thoughtfully organized home. It was an incredibly rewarding experience to see her enjoy her home in a whole new way, with systems in place to keep it organized for years to come.
